Spicer Orchards/Spicer’s Winery (Fenton)

I am just a little bit obsessed with Spicer’s. I’m from the eastside and grew up going to Blake’s. I recently went to Spicer’s, and it is the Blake’s of the West haha.

The wine flights, charcuterie, and sandwiches were some of the best I’ve experienced (and I have tried A LOT).

Almar Orchard Organic/JK’s Farmhouse Ciders

Almar is a family owned and operated, 5th generation farm, which has been in the same family since the 1850s. Dedicated to organic and sustainable agriculture, the farm consists of 300 acres – 150 of those acres are organic orchards growing apples and, more recently, pears. Almar has one of the largest organic orchards in the United States, or at least east of the Rockies. In addition to the orchards, Almar has pasture-raised pigs, meadows supporting pollinators, a sugarbush, farm store and playground.

About Their Ciders: Currently we have 7 “standard” flavors in bottles and/or cans and growlers, and a number of limited release hard ciders available only at the farm in growlers. Most of our hard ciders start with a blend of apples, although we do have a few single varietals, most notably using Honeycrisp or Goldrush apples.

All our hard ciders are natural with no added preservatives, artificial flavors, sulfites or sorbates, and they are gluten free. And because we use traditional brewing methods and don’t filter our products, our ciders are cloudier – more substantial in appearance and in flavor. Not only do you get more of the apple flavor, you get body and texture for a more robust hard cider.

Orchard Hours:
Mon-Sat: 9am – 5pm
Sun: 12pm – 5pm

We are open year round!

Yates Store at Canterbury Village (Clarkston)

You have the Yates Store in Canterbury Village (which is not a true cider mill, but it’s still a great experience), and then you can enjoy a drink at the C Pub!

Open Daily: 10am-8pm

Dexter Cider Mill (Dexter)

They sell hard cider here, and sometimes they offer tastings too! Since they don’t have a tasting room that’s open all the time, I put them in the honorable mentions category!

Open 8am – 5pm, Wednesday-Sunday throughout cider season. Cider season is late August – November.

Hot Spiced Cider, Apple Cider Slushies, & Hard Cider too!

Gluten Free Donuts Available Here πŸ™‚

From their website: The Dexter Cider Mill is the longest continuously operating Cider Mill in Michigan. Cited by “Hour Detroit” magazine as one of the 101 places to visit in the greater Metropolitan Detroit area. Today we make cider the same way it was made over 137 years ago by using an oak rack press. Using locally grown, handpicked apples and blending 3-5 different varieties, makes each press of our cider unique.

Along with our natural oak pressed unpasteurized cider, we offer fresh apples and from our own bakery, doughnuts, caramel apples and apple nut bread. On weekends, we also have apple strudel, apple turnovers and our own hand rolled gingersnaps. Available too, are a number of apple related products: frozen slushies (Friday-Sunday), jellies, apple butter, vinegar related products, barbecue sauces, mustards, and pickled asparagus, locally grown/made products, such as popcorn, maple syrup and honey. Our own mixes as well as, The Dexter Cider Mill Apple Cookbook. Plus, boiled cider, cider vinegar, and hard cider that we are now making.

Paint Creek Cider Mill (Rochester)

If you love to be active (bike, walk, etc), then this is the spot for you to hit up!  I love that this one is located along the Paint Creek Trail so you can make it a stop along your bike route (or walking)!

They have a from scratch kitchen, cider, donuts, & ice cream too!

No U-Pick here. The apples for their cider come from their Northern Michigan farm!

Barkham Creek Farms (Haslett)

I decided to put them in the honorable mention section because Burgdorf’s Winery is right down the street! The winery is open Tues-Sun from Noon-5pm!

So even though the two businesses aren’t related, you could still make a fun day out of it!

Barkham Creek Farms is preparing to open for business on September 28th. This is a family owned and operated cider mill. Fresh pressed cider. Donuts made daily!

Cider and donut hours are 10am-6pm, Thurs-Sun for the month of October.

Pumpkins can be purchased all week long during pumpkin season.

This is also their 160th year celebration!

West Michigan Cider Mills For Adults

Robinette’s Apple Haus & Winery (Grand Rapids)

Donuts, U-Pick Apples, Corn Maze, Oh My!

Open Year Round!

Robinette’s produces several of our own wine and hard ciders on site, while others are made for us from Michigan fruit. They started serving it to the public in 2006. The first hard cider made at Robinette’s is named Barzilla’s Brew, after the founder of the farm, Barzilla Robinette. Barzilla always said, “Feel free NOT to name any of the children after me”…so they named their first cider after him!

Robinette’s has more than 20 Michigan-made wines and ciders for you to sample in the winery. No reservations are needed for our tasting room. Any time the building is open, you can come in to taste our wines and hard ciders.

We are always creating and experimenting with new wine flavors. We have several fruit wines, including Cranberry, Apple, Blueberry and two of our most popular wines, Passionate Peach Spumante and Chocolate! Be sure to ask about our mulled wine, it’s delicious!

Our cider list varies by the season and availability. Some of our current and previous offerings include Barzilla’s, Apple Cherry and Hopped Cider.

Wine tasting is $8 per person (prices subject to change). We invite you to join us for a tasting where you can sip and savor our house-made favorites. Ages 21+ are allowed in the tasting room.

The Winery-Gift Barn is open daily!
Mon-Sat; 10am-6pm
Sun; Noon-6pm
(Last wine tasting 15 min before closing)

More about the cider mill:

Established in 1911, Robinette’s Orchard has been a West Michigan staple for over 100 years. In response to consumer demand, the Robinette family opened the Apple Haus in 1973. The Apple Haus is home to the bakery, dining area, cider mill, home-grown seasonal fruits, and a variety of other tasty treats and gift boxes.

At Robinette’s, we believe in creating memories that last a lifetime. Bring your family and friends to enjoy a day of apple picking, hayrides, wine tasting and corn mazes. Don’t forget your cider and donuts! Our farm offers a unique experience that connects you with nature and the joy of farming. Come and make memories with us that you’ll cherish forever! Vander Mill Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids)

Tap Room, Restaurant, & Production

Hours: Tues-Sat; 3-10pm
Happy Hour: Tues-Fri; 3-6pm

Their tagline on their website is “A Hard Cider is Good To Find” and that makes me already love them!

From their site: Paul and Amanda Vander Heide started Vander Mill in 2006. The vision wasn’t elaborate: a small-town cider mill where people can feel at home. What started as a small and regionally distributed product, the Vander Mill hard cider brand quickly gained a strong customer base and the production facility needed to expand in 2012. Greater regional distribution demanded further growth, and a new production facility and tap room was opened in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 2016. Today, Vander Mill distributes to Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

The Tasting House and Northern Natural Cider House and Winery is a destination for hard cider and wine connoisseurs and offers our full-line of hard ciders and wines, along with limited and special-issue selections.
